If You Are in a Shell

Harry Shum Jr

This is hands-down the most beautiful video I’ve ever seen about shyness and bullying.  Glee star, Harry Shum, Jr., choreographed this incredible piece about his own struggles with both, and it’s so deeply moving.

I love how it blends the storytelling, the positive message, and the art together – if you’ve got a shy child at home, they might really love it.  Please check out this important work AFTER THE JUMP!

Detroit Dance-Off

West Side Story

Nothing gets me revved on a Monday morning like a good dance-off – I’m talking West Side Story to Zoolander to pretty much anything produced by Adam Shankman.  So I refuse to start my work week until someone can tell me who won this dance-off – the kid with the fresh moves or the grooviest NBA usher of all time.

Ya Feel Me?

Dance

This is how I start to feel around Thursday…

I accidentally skipped this week’s Moment of Zen, so please accept this high-quality pelvic grinding in its place.

You’re Driving Me Up the Wall!

Cafelule-4

As if it weren’t already hard enough to get an acting gig, now you need to be able to do it suspended from the sides of tall buildings.  Check out this gorgeous short video of artists, musicians, and dancers performing live from the walls of a cathedral in Italy.  …AFTER THE JUMP!

Dancing Traffic Cop

No one loves to cut a rug more than I do.  Or maybe this lady does.  Meet Mentoria Hutchinson, the dancing traffic cop who’s been dancing in traffic for 33 years.  I love her and her story!  Like she says, “I’ve never seen nobody dance and be mad.  It’s the best way to keep yourself happy!”

Dancers Among Us

I think I’m what you would call a “dance enthusiast.”  I do Zumba dvd’s in my living room.  I’ve loved dance since I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway show “Cats” as a little girl.  (Singing cats are the portal to so many things, n’est-ce pas?)  And if I could be any kind of athlete – let’s be clear, I can’t because I’m just not aerodynamic – I would be a dancer.  I was born for leg warmers and costume changes.

So obviously I love Jordan Matter’s series, Dancers Among Us, which captures dancers bringing everyday moments to life.  (We’ve all gone into the jete splits after a good shopping spree, am I right?!).  …The photo of the guy in the shower is amahhhh-zing. READ MORE!

There is one tv event I look forward to all year with the kind of anticipation forgivable only in children on Christmas Eve.  So You Think You Can Dance is back tonight!

For the uninitiated, SYTYCD (you can forget it if you think I’m going to type out the whole damn thing every time in this post) is, yes, an elimination show, but that’s where the similarities to its reality show brethren end.  This is a show for true lovers of dance (the other kind watch Dancing with the Stars).  Dancers come together from all over the country, are challenged to perform outside of their genre, and break our hearts with how achingly talented they are.  (Suggestion: it is particularly gratifying to watch this show while sitting on the couch eating potato chips.)  After every season, I vow to learn to do the splits, but I’d settle for looking like SYTYCD’s host, Cat Deeley.  I’m certain her supernatural beauty has something to do with having more teeth than the average person…and also go-go-gadget legs.

Anyway, if you’re inclined to dismiss my enthusiasm as “fanaticism,” I will tell you only that even my dad loved this show, and I’ve never met someone with worse rhythm and dance instincts in my life.  The first video below was his favorite routine.  The second is mine – for obvious reasons.  Still not convinced?  Take a look at some of my other favorite dances from the last 9 seasons.  You can’t help but feel more connected to yourself and to other people after watching some of the breathtaking work these artists have done.
