A So Long and a Sunbeam

This weekend, we held the first of 3 parties to celebrate my mom’s life. There were tiaras, speeches, good food, and beautiful memories. Sadly (or maybe luckily) no one took their top off for Mardi Gras beads.

My mom’s rather unconventional final wish was  …READ MORE!

Junk Drawer: Week of September 20th, 2013

Okay, so my first experiment with “unplugging” after my phone was stolen this week has me thinking this: Anyone who says disconnecting once in awhile is good for you? LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE. These are the same people who told you Santa was real. Being without a phone since Wednesday has been like medieval torture (having never actually been medievally tortured myself).

For those of you who DO have technology, here’s a little link round-up from this week on the web…You know, for when you’re at brunch with your friends and they’re busy Instagramming bokeh pics of cappuccino foam.

Personal Anthems

Emeli Sande Wonder Still

Do you ever find yourself thinking how much cooler life would be if it came with a personal soundtrack?  Say, if Eye of the Tiger played every time you stepped into the shower.  Or Beethoven’s 5th (dun dun dun DUN) during serious conversations at work.  I’m sort of always collecting theme songs for my personal soundtrack, and I think we’ve known each other long enough that I can share one of my favorites anthems with you now. …READ MORE!

Rites of Passage

Brooklyn Bridge Sunset

There are certain rites of passage in a person’s life: Puberty. Scantron tests. Food service jobs.

In the life of a New Yorker, one of them is being mugged. And last night, the cosmos decided it was my turn.

Vids of the Week

Sometimes you just need a good petting, am I right?  Check out my vid pics of the week and see what I mean AFTER THE JUMP!

Now You See Them, Now You Don’t

On the edge

Yesterday was the first day we felt a hint of fall in New York.  Although it was still a balmy 62 degrees, some of the wussier Yanks hit the streets in fleece.  I mean, REALLY?  I will wait until The Last Possible Second to give up wearing flip-flops.  It has to be subzero weather – because I’m from Wisconsin, and I was born in a snowbank.  (Also this may or may not be part of my Navy Seals training.)

But as we ARE in the final countdown to the first day of fall (this Sunday!), I thought it’d be fun to …READ MORE!

Presidential Pin-Ups

This week is full of all kinds of celebrations – first National Play-Doh Day and now Constitution Day!  If there’s one thing America knows how to do with very little margin of error, it’s throw a kegger.

In homage to those fine fellas who made our great nation possible, today I give you presidential pin-ups!  Who knew Washington could be so sassy?  …AFTER THE JUMP!!

Life in Miniature

BusIn an age when we can make new experiences feel old with a vintage filter in Instagram, it seems we are constantly searching for ways to make our lives feel more memorable.  But did you ever consider that all you really need is some pocket change and a sense of humor? …READ MORE!

Polka Popes

Polka Popes

It’s National Play-Doh Day!  I’m sure you’re all observing the holiday with earnest self-reflection, but I’M observing it with play-doh popes in tuna fish cans. See what I’m talking about here!

Well, hey! Welcome back!

Hope you had a great weekend! I spent a little of mine perusing the archives from last week’s Spring runway shows. I was pleased to find that the day-of-the-week underwear I had in the 80s has come back around – really takes the guesswork out of my morning routine. Keeping fingers crossed for grown-up Garanimals next year. There were, however, a few things I think we need to talk about:
