I think I’m what you would call a “dance enthusiast.” I do Zumba dvd’s in my living room. I’ve loved dance since I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway show “Cats” as a little girl. (Singing cats are the portal to so many things, n’est-ce pas?) And if I could be any kind of athlete – let’s be clear, I can’t because I’m just not aerodynamic – I would be a dancer. I was born for leg warmers and costume changes.
So obviously I love Jordan Matter’s series, Dancers Among Us, which captures dancers bringing everyday moments to life. (We’ve all gone into the jete splits after a good shopping spree, am I right?!).
After watching his son, fully immersed in imaginary play one afternoon, Matter started to wonder where that enthusiasm goes as we get older. As an artist, he was inspired to create “photographs that would show the world as if through his eyes. The people in the images would be alive and in the moment.” Dancers were the obvious choice – so present and so full of that kinetic vocabulary that communicates emotion in a way that words sometimes can’t.
The end product is this book – a dedication to Matter’s children and a wish for them to live with passion! Some of the photos below…Shower Guy is hands-down my favorite. Not kidding – he looks kinda familiar…
